On the afternoon of 24th October 2014, the Institute of Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics invited Professor Zhao Yongqing, the chief editor of Foreign Languages and Their Teaching to attend the “The Guidance of Contributing to Journals and Writing ” symposium on Sipailou campus.
More than 20 teachers from School of Foreign Languages and some postgraduates attended the symposium. Prof. Zhao is the executive director of National Association of EFL Writing Teaching and Research and English Speech Teaching and Research Institute. She is also one of the experts for English major in the Ministry of Education and former dean of School of English Studies in Dalian University of Foreign Languages.
In the first half of the symposium, Prof. Zhao Yongqing introduced the types of academic papers of Foreign Languages and Their Teaching, including theoretical argumentative essay, literature review, experimental report and book review based on empirical data. She emphasized that the journal would always hold a prudent and quality-based attitude towards all manuscripts and respect experts and take care of the youth regardless of qualification and experience .
As the chief editor of the journal, Prof. Zhao also emphasized that Foreign Languages and Their Teaching adheres to the tenet of the journal, valuing academic papers that carry true research content and treating every detail prudently. The Editorial Department discusses repeatedly with contributors on abstract, key words, chart format, cited references and so on. Prof. Zhao also introduced the three-step-examining system”, subsequent amendment, editing process in the reviewing process of Foreign Languages and Their Teaching. At the same time, she said that young teachers and scholars should work hard and improve themselves through publishing articles, and should take responsibility of their own articles.
In the second part of the symposium, Mr. Tangbin and Ms. Chen Zhengrong presented academic articles. Prof. Zhao put forward pertinent advice on topic value, literature review, research methodology and result and discussion of the two articles. She emphasized that the author should make thorough research on references and make review of the key points, highlight the research value in the introduction part, make close integration of previous researches and the current research in the discussion part and finally pay attention to the relevance between theoretical foundation and research result.
The symposium lasted for two hours, after which the audience asked questions and voiced their opinions based on the two articles presented. The symposium enjoyed a warm atmosphere.
