At 2 p.m. on October 8, 2014, as the Ministry of Education, Changjiang Scholar Professor Wang Ning made a wonderful lecture entitled Globalization, World Literature and Translation in the School of Foreign Languages Auditorium for the majority of teachers and students. The entire lecture lasted for nearly two hours, during which Professor Wang's vivid examples and humorous language won waves of applause of the present audience.
Professor Wang is currently the Changjiang Scholars Distinguished Professor of Foreign Languages Department, Tsinghua University, the director of Comparative Literature and Culture Research Center, and Zhiyuan Chair Professor of the Art and Humanities Institute, Shanghai Jiaotong University. He is one of the contemporary fewer humanists who does writing in both English and Chinese and has achieved widespread international influence. In addition, he is also the leader in Chinese comparative literature and literary theory research. The academic study of Professor Wang characterizes as international, cutting-edge, theoretical and interdisciplinary, which is unique among domestic peers. Among published research papers of Professor Wang, there are more than 60 articles included in A & HCI or SSCI database, which makes him stand out among Chinese humanists at home and abroad, and some of his articles have been translated into other languages, such as German, Italian, Spanish, Arabic, etc.
At the beginning of the lecture, on behalf of College of Foreign Languages, Dean Chen extended a warm welcome to Professor Wang, and then followed by Professor Zhao Jianhong as the lecture host to introduce Professor Wang.
The lecture was divided into four parts. The first part was an introduction. Professor Wang proposed reflections relative to the status of Chinese Humanistic and Social science for today's globalized context, and gave his views on globalization. In the second part, Professor Wang introduced the historical evolution of the world literature concept and its meaning, and then explained cultural relativity and universality. In the third part, Professor Wang elaborated the criteria and principles of the world literature. Finally, he shared his views on Chinese Literature and Translation in the Context of World Literature. During the lecture, by using his unique sense of humor and chic style, Professor Wang opened up a new door for everyone to the world of literature. In the next reviews and Q & A session, the questions from many teachers and students, and the wise answers from Professor Wang pushed the scene of the atmosphere to the climax. At the end of the lecture, students from College of Foreign Languages presented Professor Wang flowers to show their respect and gratitude. And the professor also kindly posed for pictures with everyone. So far, this lecture ended up with success.
As Dean Chen said, we fervently hoped that Professor Wang could come here as often as possible and gave guidance in our literature research.
